Volunteer FAQs
What are the general requirements for being a volunteer?
To be considered for the MVP, individuals should be US or Canadian citizens who are at least 21 years old with professional skills relevant to healthcare settings in developing countries. Medical professionals should have US or Canadian licensures in good standing.
How does the MVP application process work?
Interested individuals can begin by completing a preliminary application for one of our current openings. If a candidate is selected for further consideration, he or she will be contacted to complete a secondary application and to arrange for a phone interview.
Once a candidate is accepted into the MVP, he or she will be invited to join other accepted volunteers at CMMB’s annual MVP orientation in the New York/New Jersey prior to deployment to the field.

How are volunteer placements determined?
Applicants may apply directly to specific placements or through our general application on our current openings page. If a general application is submitted and the individual is selected for further consideration, placement will be determined after official acceptance into the MVP based on the individual’s skills and preferences. In general, however, it is recommended to apply for specific placements within our current openings.
What type of support do volunteers receive?
The MVP distinguishes between long-term volunteers (those serving at least 1 year) and short-term volunteers (those serving less than 1 year) in determining the support a volunteer receives. In general, long-term volunteers receive:
- Airfare to and from host country
- A monthly stipend (generally $350 per month)
- Housing
- Emergency medical and overseas evacuation (medevac) insurance and hazard insurance
Are volunteers required to raise any funds?
In order to sustain the MVP so that CMMB may continually send and support volunteers around the world to serve those in need, long-term volunteers are asked to raise some of the funds related to the cost of their mission. The estimated cost of supporting a volunteer for one year is $15,000. The MVP asks volunteers to raise one-third of the cost, or $5,000.
To accomplish this, the MVP provides all accepted long-term volunteers with a variety of fundraising tools, including personal fundraising web pages, and individual assistance. View current volunteer fundraising pages and support a volunteer here.
Will CMMB help volunteers with student loan deferment?
Yes, long-term volunteers are generally able to defer qualified student loans through the MVP’s assistance during their year of service.
