CMMB medical volunteer Emily Barrows has been busy running the clinic at the Kopila Valley Children’s Home and School in Nepal, especially with so many rotten teeth! With only intermittent access to running water, the children often use ash to clean their teeth. But Emily doesn’t plan on letting things stay that way:

Laura Chenevert didn’t go through airport security, didn’t present a boarding pass or check her bags. She simply ran — for the plane and for her life.

Chenevert, 30, a Cumberland native, was in Sudan in June, just before the African country split in two. And the area between the split — the Nuba Mountains of southern Kordofan, where Chenevert volunteered as a physician’s assistant — was in the crossfire.

The spirit of humanitarianism is reacting quickly to aid those hit by the unexpected or those whose lives are disrupted by a calamity, now left destitute, lost and vulnerable. It is based on principles such as empathy and being a good neighbor, and something that CMMB celebrates with many others this August 19th—World Humanitarian Day.

March 8th marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.  Johanna Moch—a CMMB medical volunteer in Ecuador— describes in a blog entry her experience with an elderly woman named Señora Lucia she met by chance when shopping at a corner store.

As I drove through Port-au-Prince this week on the way to the HIV/AIDS clinic with some of my children from the orphanage, I was once again reminded of the devastating situation that continues to exist here in Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake of January 12th, 2010.

The city of Cap Haitian was not directly affected by the devastating earthquake that demolished Port au Prince, but has absorbed the wounded Diaspora of the areas affected. As a result, an already strained city, Cap Haitian has swelled with relatives, homeless and orphans.
