Malaria Communities Project

What is the Malaria Communities Project?
In Zambia, malaria accounts for an estimated 36 percent of hospital admissions and 40 percent of deaths of children under five.  The Malaria Communities Project (MCP) aims to reduce the incidence and impact of malaria in Zambia in three districts in accordance with the National Malaria Control Strategic Plan.  The 3-year, $1.44 million USAID-funded initiative targets pregnant women and children under five in three rural districts of Luapula Province, some of the hardest-hit malarial zones in Zambia.

Improving Health Outcomes
Working together with the Ministry of Health, CMMB ensures that vulnerable populations seek and utilize long-lasting insecticide treated nets (ITNs), preventative medication during pregnancy, and malaria diagnosis and treatment. CMMB links its project to local community organizations and health facilities for distribution of nets and commodities.

Working Closely with Communities
CMMB trains volunteer project supervisors and community health workers about how to prevent and control malaria and how to deliver social and behavioral change communication (SBCC) messages to mobilize the community.
