Length of Commitment: One Year (Minimum)

Description: The Catholic Medical Mission Board-Medical Volunteer Program is seeking a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, and Orthotist/Prosthetist to work as part of a small team in the implementation of a new community-based rehabilitation program in a district near Trujillo, Perú. The job includes the implementation of different components of the community-based rehabilitation program which is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of disabilities within La Esperanza. Specifically, program components are based around the training of community health agents in therapy basics. Other components may include programs for patient education, support groups, home health visits, improving access to transportation and recreation, program for assistive devices and other equipment, and the creation of job opportunities for persons who have disabilities. Candidate should have a comfortable conversational Spanish level, and be flexible, self-driven, and organized.

Description: Clinica Madre de Cristo is located in Trujillo, northwestern Peru. It serves the urban community of La Esperanza with 8-bed capacity, averaging 50 people per day in the out-patient department, 15 minor surgeries per day, and 10 birth deliveries per year. The clinic is open from Monday to Saturday 7:30am to 6pm. with 20 (rotating) doctors and 2 nurses.

Description: Hospicio Santiago Apostol (HAS) is located in Chimbote, Peru and is 450 km (7 hrs.) north from Lima airport. It provides hospice care to impoverished terminally ill persons of the urban community with 12 rooms having 24-bed capacity, averaging 45 patients per day in the out-patient department, and offers HIV services. Clinic is open from Monday to Saturday with staff of a doctor and 3 nurses.

Description: NPH DR needs medical volunteers, especially physical and occupational therapists, to provide care to the 215 children living on site. All of these children have suffered a tragedy before coming to NPH - many were abandoned, abused, neglected, or malnourished. NPH hosts several children with CP and others with disabilities caused by birth or injuries. The medical volunteers also do outreach to the surrounding communities. There are three small villages within walking distance of NPH. All of these communities are very poor, and nearly everyone living there does not have access to medical attention. NPH medical volunteers also work on health education in these villages, and with the kids of NPH. 15% of the children are HIV positive, and there are many misconceptions about how it is spread. NPH is working on educating everyone so that the children and the surrounding communities can enjoy better health. NPH hopes that medical volunteers will be positive role models for the children, and provide a year of excellent service.

Description: VOLUNTEER PHYSICAL, OCCUPATIONAL AND SPEECH THERAPISTS work in outpatient rehabilitation at Hospital Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra in the city of Tena in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The clinic PediHabilidad provides rehabilitation services to children with special needs to enhance their ability to navigate within the world in which they live. In addition to working in the clinic, volunteers visit rural Indigenous community to provide community based rehabilitation, and learn to fabricate braces, chairs and standers for persons with disabilities. Volunteers also participate in training Ecuadorian therapists and supervise internships for University therapy students. Volunteers will be exposed to Spanish as well as the Indigenous Quechuan culture and live with a local family during their stay. Pediatric rehabilitation experience as well as an intermediate level understanding of Spanish is recommended, but not a limiting factor in this placement. Volunteers should be creative, initiative and motivated to participate in ongoing program development. General Medicine Physician and Dentists (Ecuador)

Volunteer Site Location: Clinica Misional “Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe" in Ecuador

Description: Clinica Misional works to provide quality sustainable health and dental care to those people who live in the “Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe” in Zamora-Chinchipe Province and the other underserved citizens of southern Ecuador. It will be in need of a Medical Doctor starting December 2012. It has Dentistry, Dental-Hygienist, Dental Lab, Nurses, Medical Brigades inside and outside the Clinic. Its international team of volunteers came from 16 countries providing clinical services on General Medicine, Odontology, Ophthalmology, ENT, General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Gastroenterology, Gynecology, Dematology and Plastic Surgery. Description: Hôpital Sacré Coeur is the largest private hospital and public health services provider for the 225,000 people living in the Milot region of Northern Haiti. In addition to 120 beds and full in-patient services, HSC offers outpatient clinics, full maternity services, has a pediatric wing, dental services, prosthetic workshop, pharmacy and complete laboratory, and provides HIV/AIDS services that include a prevention of mother-to-child transmission program. Outreach is done through the Community Health Services department. Visiting volunteers regularly perform surgeries and treat patients but more importantly they spend a lot of their time teaching and mentoring the Haitian staff. Over the past 26 years this unique collaborative relationship has grown and strengthened and the aim of these volunteer positions is to train and supplement knowledge, to build the capacity of local staff in their particular fields.

Description: The Missionaries of the Poor in Cap-Haitien, Haiti has a 3-acre monastery where 16 Brothers with the support of volunteers provide free service to the poor. There are about 200 homeless residents, a majority of whom are elderly with various heart conditions. In addition, there are about 60 orphaned/abandoned children, many of whom are physically disabled. The Mission has a dispensary serving several patients from the neighborhood and across the city. They are planning to conduct outreach medical assistance to the slum neighborhood. The Mission also hopes to begin offering its services to the growing population of HIV/AIDS patients. Description: The Parish Clinic of Santa Rosa de Lima is located in the town of Guaimaca, Honduras. Guaimaca, located 90 km northeast of the capital of Tegucigalpa, has 25,000 residents. The clinic offers primary care services to its patients with little economic resources from the town and rural mountain villages. The total population of the county is around 60,000 Spanish is the primary language spoken. In Honduras, resources such as medications are unstable and limited. Malnutrition, particularly in children and elderly are quite generalized. Given the geography of the country physical access is difficult and costly for the poor, which includes about 75% of the population of the country. The clinic's efforts are centered around providing timely acute care, health maintenance for chronic illness, health education and prevention. Strong effort is also placed in complementing the medical care with natural medicine. Present services are provided by one Nurse Practitioner and two support Staff. Several medical/dental brigades from the US offer services through the clinic every year.

Description: The FCJM Sisters Clinic of Onanrunggu Parish is located in Kabupaten, Samorsir Island, North Sumatra. The clinic mainly provides healthcare to the surrounding rural poor population. It has 6-bed capacity and an average of 60 outpatients per day. Common illnesses among patients include ulcers, hepatitis and tuberculosis. The region suffers from high rates of infant mortality and childhood morbidity. It is currently staffed by one nurse-Sister from Monday to Saturday who is on-call 24/7.

Description: CMMB implements healthcare programs that build the capacity of local health systems to provide quality services, without discrimination, to people in need around the world. Programs address major causes of morbidity and mortality in the developing world, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB and maternal and child health illnesses. These programs aim to reduce preventable deaths by increasing access to healthcare services in the communities where CMMB works, and by strengthening capacity within local health facilities. As part of this mission, CMMB’s South Africa country program is seeking a Public Health Program Coordination Volunteer for HIV prevention (HIV counseling and testing) for its home-based HIV counseling and testing program in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The volunteer will assist with daily program-related activities for this large-scale, five-year CDC-funded program. The goal of the program is to avert new HIV infections through the provision of social and behavioral change communication and home-based HIV counseling and testing. S/he will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of all CMMB prevention activities in line with the program’s technical strategy, targets and objectives. S/he will also help oversee the adequate implementation of the program’s interventions by all partners, ensuring the project services reach the targeted populations in the district.

Description: Bugando Medical Centre is a consultant and teaching hospital for the Lake and Western zones of the United Republic of Tanzania. It is situated along the shores of Lake Victoria in Mwanza City serving as a referral center for tertiary specialist care for six regions, including Mwanza, Mara, Kagera, Shinyanga, Tabora and Kigoma with a catchment population of approximately 14 million people. The hospital is in partnership with the Catholic Church, the Tanzania Government through the Ministry of Health, the Touch Foundation and other partners. Description: The Missionaries of the Poor has a monastery at Mutundwe, Kampala in which 80 young men are in formation. They are serving the Good Shepherd Home with 300+ homeless, destitute, orphaned and handicapped residents at Mengo-Kisenyi, and Bethlehem Home with 150+ handicapped children at Busega. They also have a medical dispensary serving the slum neighborhood of Mengo-Kisenyi which is open to the public daily, averaging about 50 patients (another one is to open at Busega soon). Food packages are given out daily to 35 slum dwellers and/or internally displaced persons (IDP). There are various health issues, e.g., Malaria, Typhoid, HIV, Tuberculosis, Skin Diseases (primarily from outpatients within the slums of Mengo-Kisenyi, a community of over 10,000 families many of whom are IDP’s & Refugees from war-torn countries like the Sudan, DRC, Somalia, etc.). As part of this mission, CMMB’s Zambia country program is seeking a Public Health Program Volunteer to support the implementation of a variety of capacity building-focused health interventions funded by the U.S. government and private donors. The volunteer will assist with daily program-related activities for these programs, which address HIV/AIDS prevention and support, malaria prevention and treatment, leprosy detection and maternal and child health. S/he will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of select CMMB Zambia health programs, in consultation with local leadership. Potential duties include program coordination, technical writing, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) assistance, work planning, etc.

These programs aim to reduce preventable deaths by increasing access to healthcare services in the communities where CMMB works, and by strengthening capacity within local health facilities. As CMMB expands its global impact, it seeks Program Managers to spearhead its healthcare programs around the world. Specifically, CMMB seeks five (5) medical doctors with advanced training in infectious diseases for these positions. In addition to the physicians’ technical expertise, the candidates should possess strong experience in public health or related program management, with a strong interest in global health and social change. The anticipated start date for these volunteer positions is October 1, 2011 and the program managers will be required to serve for 1-2 years. This is a very important position available through Catholic Medical Mission Board’s (CMMB) Medical Volunteer Program (MVP). A good understanding of global healthcare, development and international affairs would be very useful. Responsibilities include: researching and writing compelling stories, blogs, and other content for CMMB’s website, external news outlets, direct mail pieces and social media sites; reporting for CMMB Newsline, CMMB’s quarterly e-newsletter; shooting photographs and video; producing photo essays and other multimedia content; responding to international information requests from headquarters staff; assisting with special initiatives.
