Corporate Profile
BD Becton, Dickinson and Company
BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE:BDX) is a global medical technology company with a strong sense of responsibility as a corporate citizen of the world. Over several decades, that responsibility has found a life-giving expression in BD’s close partnership with CMMB.
In the past, BD has been a generous donor of medicines and medical supplies to CMMB partners around the world. More recently, BD expanded its partnership with CMMB through an innovative program involving BD employees working as a team to deliver a response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Zambia. The volunteer program, launched in 2005 as part of BD’s social responsibility initiative, offered BD employees the opportunity to offer their expertise by working in rural communities in Zambia affected by the pandemic. A group of ten employees from more than 350 applicants around the world were selected to work at five rural healthcare facilities.
During their assignment, the BD volunteers worked as laboratory trainers, focusing on raising awareness and increasing best practices for routine and HIV/AIDS lab tests; general assistants, teaching basic skills to local residents; and construction workers, repairing and renovating hospitals and clinics.
In preparation for the trip, BD associates from offices around the world contributed funds, which were matched by donations from BD, which also contributed BD-manufactured phlebotomy equipment and laboratory supplies, including syringes, needles, thermometers and supplies. The volunteer teams also undertook their own fundraising campaigns, selling t-shirts and wristbands they developed themselves inside and outside the company. The funds raised were used to develop textbooks and ladders for the clinics in Zambia.
