ANISA

What is ANISA?
ANISA means “together” in Zande, the local language of South Sudan- a fitting name for CMMB’s community-based HIV initiative in the newly independent nation. This five-year, $5.9 million CDC-funded program, which began in October 2009, aims to reduce the incidence of new HIV infections in Western Equatoria State (WES). ANISA also works to improve care and support to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) and strengthen the local capacity to deliver health services by working within government structures to train health care workers and support the establishment of strong systems.

HIV Testing, Prevention, and Treatment
ANISA has established static and outreach HIV counseling and testing centers throughout four counties in WES which are reporting the highest HIV prevalence rates in all of South Sudan. CMMB trains social and community health workers to teach primary prevention techniques and reduce stigma and discrimination against PLWHA. Through ANISA’s mother-to-child transmission prevention services (PMTCT), expectant mothers who tested HIV positive receive appropriate antiretroviral treatment (ART) and regular follow-up support. Additionally, in partnership with World Vision International, thousands of PLHIV have received regular home-based care from trained providers.

Building Local Capacity

CMMB is working to support government health systems and local partner capacity. For example, the ANISA team conducted an assessment of the laboratories connected to major hospitals, trained laboratory personnel in basic laboratory skills and is now ensuring a constant supply of essential consumables and equipment. CMMB has introduced the Country Medical Offices to an efficient system of data collection and analysis and continues to conduct regular trainings with the officers on-site. Lastly, CMMB has brings together key government officials on an annual basis for educational sessions on issues affecting health planning and implementation.
