History
Since 2004, CMMB has been a member of the AIDSRelief consortium, working to expand the delivery of antiretroviral therapies (ART) and care to HIV-infected persons in Africa and the Caribbean. This program is funded by the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). In 2009, CMMB helped provide HIV care and treatment for thousands of people in Haiti, South Africa and Kenya. Today, CMMB continues its life-saving work with AIDSRelief in Kenya and Haiti.
In Action: Kenya
One of 15 PEPFAR focus countries, Kenya has a national HIV prevalence of 6.3% among adults, with approximately 1.1 million people living with HIV at the end of 2007. CMMB manages 11 of the 29 PEPFAR-funded AIDSRelief sites in Kenya, in addition to 19 other sites where Kenyans receive ART, adherence support, and clinical care services.
In Action: Haiti
CMMB collaborates with Haitian community partners to ensure continuity of care for the pediatric population. CMMB created a referral and active case-finding system, so that children in need of HIV clinical services may receive care through AIDSRelief. CMMB works with community health workers and families to reduce stigma, and educate and train care-givers on the specific needs of children living with HIV.
In Action: South Africa
CMMB actively participated in the AIDSRelief consortium in South Africa from 2004 to 2010. Through the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) network of healthcare clinics, CMMB monitored treatment sites and provided technical assistance to ensure uninterrupted treatment and expanded availability of care. Having increased capacity to provide high-quality care, local South African organizations are now taking the lead at all formerly CMMB-supervised sites.
