For the month of November, CMMB made 54 shipments with a total value of $9,567,034.31.
Notable shipments for November 2007 include:
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Last month, CMMB put together a shipment of medicines and medical supplies for the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, a large religious order that runs a network of hospitals in the midwestern United States. CMMB supports the efforts of the Sisters in the Dominican Republic, where they operate a rural health program. The program enlists in-country health providers to serve 18 communities. In addition, the Sisters, who have a foundation as well, established the Mother Frances Clinic in Santiago that offers primary health care services, pediatric care, gynecological exams, dental care, and eye care including cataract surgeries. CMMB’s Healing Help pharmaceutical donation program is continuously working to secure much-needed medicines and medical supplies to support the efforts of the Sisters in the Dominican Republic. We are currently responding to a request from the Sisters for eye care products for their clinic.
VIETNAM: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Long Island City in Queens, New York hand-carried a donation of CMMB medicines and medical supplies to Vietnam last month for the Diocese of Haiphong. The need in Vietnam is great, after 20 years of devastating war and annual calamities such as typhoons and floods. The Diocese of Haiphong has 120,000 people, most of whom are poor farmers. Primary urgent needs include medicines, food, and clothing. CMMB responded to the need for medicines with a donation of antibiotics and analgesics in November. Our neighbors in Long Island City, where we operate a 33,000 square foot Distribution Center, are our partners in faith-based response. CMMB has continually answered the call for help from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church since 2000.
KENYA: CMMB recently sent a donation of Ensure by Abbott Pharmaceutical Co. to Moi University Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. Moi runs this facility and its health programs in partnership with Indiana University (IU). The IU-Kenya program has an intense focus on conquering HIV/AIDS throughout Kenya, and was up for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. This program is headed by a professor emeritus from IU, who permanently moved to Kenya upon his retirement in 2000. CMMB’s partnership with the IU-Kenya program is ten years old. The impact of this donation is immeasurable. For example, Musa, pictured above, walked into a village HIV clinic with no blood pressure, unable to speak, and unable to eat. The canned nutritional supplement sent by CMMB and donated by Abbott Pharmaceuticals, Co. facilitated Musa’s return to regular foods. He took three a day for almost three months and is now living at home.
