Shipments
October 2007
For the month of October, CMMB made 46 shipments to 18 countries with a total value of $6,134,668.39.
Notable shipments for October 2007:
HAITI: Last month CMMB made a shipment of Ensure at the request of the Daughters of Charity to support the nutritional needs of mothers, many who are enrolled in CMMB’s Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PMTCT) program at the Hospital Sacre Coeur in Miot, Haiti. The Hospital Sacre Coeur is operated by the Crudem Foundation and is a 64-bed hospital, with 3,000 in-patient admissions annually. The Hospital serves more than 60,000 outpatients a year in pediatric, surgical, AIDS, filariasis and other specialty clinics through their primary health care center, nutritional center and mobile clinic.
Nutritional supplements are critical components for any disease or chronic illness treatment regimen. They are always scarce and as important as medicines themselves. The Daughters of Charity first made the request through their Catholic Hospital System, Ascension Health. Ascension contacted Abbott Pharmaceuticals directly to secure the nutritional supplement. Abbott, in turn, contacted CMMB to facilitate the donation. It is thanks to our wide network of charity partners, faith-based sister agencies, health professionals and health care systems, and pharmaceutical partners, that we are able to bring quality healthcare to those in need.
PHILIPPINES: CMMB recently put together a shipment of medicines and medical supplies at the request of the Bukas-Loob Diyos (BLD) Foundation for their medical mission trip to the Philippines. BLD groups are familiar with the healthcare needs of the poor in the Philippines, as they make regular medical mission trips to Lingayen in the province of Pangasinan. Teams continue to encounter cases of malnutrition, hypertension, diabetes, TB, and other common diseases in Lingayen. CMMB has supported the efforts of the BLD Foundation each year since 2000 with the donation of medicines and medical supplies. Most recently, CMMB provided the team with antibiotics, analgesics, antacids, topical creams, and anti-diarrheals. CMMB’s continued commitment to organizations like the BLD Foundation with annual or bi-annual donations of medicines and medical supplies speaks to our core value of accountability. Our responsibility does not end when the shipment leaves our warehouse, but when quality healthcare is truly available to all.
TANZANIA: CMMB is continuously working to better integrate the placement of our pharmaceuticals with all of our activities. We endeavor, for example, to put medicines where our volunteers are working, where we have directors and managers in the field, or where we have invested our resources in funded projects and programs. Last month, CMMB put together a shipment of Atropine at the request of one of our nurse volunteers in Tanzania. Mary Dawn Reavy works at the Togeta Mission Dispensary in Dar es Salaam and brought the request for this medicine to CMMB. It would be used in over 100 male circumcision surgeries that would be performed throughout the coming year. CMMB was able to procure this drug and send it to a friend of our volunteer who was traveling from the states to China as part of a pediatric open-heart surgery team. Mary Dawn was also going to be part of this team during their two-week brigade in China and she was able to pick up the medicine from her friend in China and bring it back to Tanzania!
