August 2007
For the month of August, CMMB made 50 shipments with a total value of $4,886,273.70. Our cumulative FY 2007 totals through August are 493 shipments and a total value of $174,881,306.98.
Notable shipments for August 2007:
SPAIN: Last month CMMB facilitated the donation and shipment of a life-saving cancer drug to Hospital Universitario Principe de Asturias in Spain for the treatment of a child named Jennifer. Jennifer is no stranger to CMMB, as CMMB secured this drug for Jennifer last year, again in collaboration with Schering- Plough, who donated the drug, and DHL, who shipped the drug. The drug, Interferon, is a refrigerated product that must be kept cold throughout the shipment process. In addition, the hospital needed to receive the drug by May 15th to ensure that Jennifer did not miss treatment.
PERU: CMMB has responded to emergency relief requests from our partners and other agencies who we work with and who manage programs in countries that have been affected by natural disasters. CMMB was able to put together a shipment of primary healthcare medicines to support the efforts of Airparts, Co., who recently traveled to Peru on a medical mission in response to last month’s devastating earthquake.
CONGO: While some of our consignees can accept short dated medicines, others have access to facilities that are staffed and equipped to provide the service, treatment, drugs, monitoring and prolonged care that are required by tertiary healthcare drugs. Global Strategies for HIV Prevention is one such organization. Global Strategies strives to implement international initiatives to prevent HIV infection in collaboration with others who share a similar mission and compassion for meeting the needs of women and children. CMMB was able to place nevirapine, an antiretroviral drug, in the hands of Global Strategies for HIV Prevention last month in support of their efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.
KENYA: We continue to work to integrate the placement of our medicines and our volunteers into our projects and programs, where we have invested our resources to target specific health concerns and, in our core countries, where we have country directors working in the field. Last month, we supplied primary diagnostic tools for the use of health promoters to support our AIDSRelief and PMTCT programs in Kenya. Our country director for Kenya, who was visiting CMMB headquarters in New York, was able to hand carry the 24 stethoscopes to the CMMB Kenya office.
