Beginning in 2000, CMMB supported
over 100 projects in five countries across southern
Africa aimed at developing community-based solutions
and best practices for palliative care, orphan
care and support, and HIV education. The innovative
Choose to Care program at these sites provided
hospice care for the dying, as well as housing,
food and education for children who have lost
parents. Over the six years of the program, CMMB
supported Choose to Care projects in South Africa,
Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho in collaboration
with the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference
and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.
