The HIV epidemic
that has devastated other parts of the world
has spread in force to the Asia-Pacific region.
CMMB has responded by aggressively transferring
proven programs developed in southern Africa
to this new front. In China, our China Nursing
Leadership Initiative strengthens the skills
of Chinese nurses and doctors in prevention,
care and counseling.
In India, Voluntary Counseling
and Testing Centers established by the Catholic
Bishops’ Conference of India include Born
to Live clinics that provide voluntary counseling
and testing for the prevention of mother-to-child
transmission of the HIV virus. Catholic schools
also provide HIV education for Indian youth with
CMMB’s assistance.
On the island of Papua
New Guinea, our Born
to Live clinics have become
national models. Many mission locations through
the region are also recipients of shipments of
medicines and medical supplies via CMMB’s
Healing Help program. Our Medical
Volunteer Program (MVP) places healthcare professionals in localities
for voluntary service for periods from a few
months to several years.
Programs
run by or supported by CMMB are active in the
following Caribbean countries:
